Meet Special Needs Advocate Kimberly Fisher

Kimberly Fisher is many things. She can be called an art collector, philanthropist, special needs advocate, travel enthusiast, home cook extraordinaire and business manager. However, her most beloved titles include wife and mom.

Kimberly is the wife to Smyrna’s well-known orthodontist, Dameon Fisher, and mother to 11-year-old Mackenzie, who has been diagnosed with autism.  She is also the director of operations for Fisher Orthodontics of Atlanta, and has served the community alongside her husband since 1999. Fisher Orthodontics has now grown to include three locations.

A true passion Kimberly shares with her husband is a love of art. They enjoy adding to their art collection which includes several Radcliffe Bailey pieces, as well as ones from Kevin Cole, and acclaimed early-20th century artist, Charles White. Their Smyrna home is a testament to this creative zeal.

A healthy appetite for travel prevails as well. The Fisher family has enjoyed many trips to the Caribbean over the years. They love to island-hop while soaking up the easy beach life. The Fishers also relish spending free time relaxing at their vacation home in Big Canoe.

Kimberly is a member of Delta Sigma Theta, The National Coalition of 100 Black Women – MECCA chapter, and the North Suburban Atlanta chapter of Jack and Jill. She is also busy with the rigorous schedule that accompanies raising her special needs daughter, who is in fourth grade at Nickajack Elementary in Smyrna.

A strong interest in advocating for all special needs children has Kimberly serving on two foundation boards. At Dentistry for the Developmentally Disabled, she is the patient advocate, helping parents facing issues and facilitating assistance with resources. She also serves on the board of the Dream Makers Youth Foundation, which helps children with special needs engage in sports and other creative and athletic opportunities.

When asked why she has chosen to advocate for special needs families, Kimberly answered quickly:

“It’s hard being the voice for people who can’t speak up for themselves. It’s hard being a special needs parent. It’s hard to know where to get resources and access all the things that can help your family. I want to help however I can.”

Originally from Fort Lauderdale, Kimberly loves living in the Smyrna area because of the access to outdoor activities and the “walkability” of her neighborhood. You can often spot Kimberly at area farmers markets looking for ingredients for one of her signature dishes, walking the Silver Comet Trail, or at her family’s newest favorite restaurant, Hook, Line and Schooner.

“Smyrna is not too far from Atlanta but just far enough that it has its own kind of synergy and vibe, offering something unique,” Kimberly says with enthusiasm. She savors the slower suburban pace and is quick to recognize the simple things in life as some of her greatest blessings.
